Alexandria - Route 1 Corridor

One doesn’t usually think of a bustling corridor of shops, businesses and residences as home to an airfield, but Beacon Hill in the heart of the Route 1 Corridor was just that in the early days of aviation.  Thousands of pilots were trained there prior to World War II and it remained an airfield until the late 1950’s.  After the war and before the creation of the Interstate Highway System, Route 1 was the major north-south highway from Florida to Maine, and this community was home to scores of motels, shops and restaurants to serve travelers.  A handful of those old motels are still around, but most have given way to housing developments, commercial and retail centers over the last 30 years.  Tucked between the George Washington Parkway to the east and I-95 to the west, the Route 1 Corridor still handles a lot of cars every day as a major commuting artery, but now has a more distinctly suburban feel than even 20 years ago.

At almost 1,500 acres, Huntley Meadows Park is a green escape in a very busy suburban community.  Home to some of the largest and most pristine wetland areas in Fairfax County, Huntley Meadows is a real jewel.  Every type of housing in every price range can be found in the Route 1 Corridor, and there’s plenty of “big box” retail and restaurants to support this evolving community.  INOVA Mt. Vernon Hospital offers quality care to the community’s residents, and has a particularly strong reputation for orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation.  There’s also a long-established farmer’s market every Saturday morning (in season, of course) in the shadow of the Hospital at Fairfax County’s Mt. Vernon District offices.
